Hettinger's first ever Helping Hettinger Day took place on Sunday, May 20th, and it exceeded all expectations! With the help of over 150 volunteers, Mirror Lake Park was cleaned, Main Street crosswalks were painted, and new benches were built that now line Main Street. Tumbleweeds, leaves, and other debris were cleaned around town as well. The event won recognition as the 2018 Governor's Choice Awards for Community Development through the Economic Development Association of ND.

2019 saw an even larger group of over 200 volunteers who completed over 30 projects around town, benefiting businesses, individuals, and community spaces. The event was awarded the 2019 Downtown Impact Award for Downtown Atmosphere and the 2019 Main Street Vibrancy Award.
