The Smithsonian is coming!
The Smithsonian is coming. Yes, that's right. The world-famous Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, is coming to the Hettinger area via a traveling exhibit, Key Ingredients: America by Food.
It started with the sanction of the Dakota Buttes Historical Society/Museum, the official historical society of Adams County and with a grant proposal written a year and a half ago, says Smith, and will culminate in a six-week exhibit at the Dakota Buttes Museum open May 5 through June 17, 2012, highlighting the eclectic development of the cultural history of food in the United States of America.
The exhibit will be presented in five themes:  Land of Plenty, Local Flavors, Dynamic Delivery, A Festival of Feasts, and Home Cooking.  Each theme is presented in  a multiple-element kiosk that explores the connections between Americans and the foods they produce, prepare, preserve, and present at table, giving a provocative and thoughtful look at the historical, regional and social traditions that merge in everyday meals and celebrations.
Six sites in the state were chosen to host the Key Ingredients: America by Food exhibit, with Hettinger, one of the six. "It's an honor that brings with it much work," says Smith. The other five towns are Cavalier, Watford City, Valley City, Williston, and New Rockford.
Some of the events planned before and during the six-week exhibit  are Dakota Discussions, Soup Wars, Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies, a High Tea, coffee klatches, a Western BBQ and numerous youth projects, events and activities at the Hettinger School and in Adams County 4-H clubs and Scout troops.
The Key Ingredients: America by Food exhibit is free and open to the public.

THEY’RE BACK: Hettinger-Scranton boys come back from bus accident with a victory over
Glen Ullin-Hebron
HETTINGER — Friday was a return to normalcy for the towns of Hettinger and Scranton.
By: Dustin Monke, The Dickinson Press 12/21/12 issue

HETTINGER — Friday was a return to normalcy for the towns of Hettinger and Scranton.
Exactly one week after the Hettinger-Scranton boys basketball team avoided tragedy in a bus accident, it returned to its home court at Roberts-Reinke Gymnasium.
Missing four varsity players, including three starters — senior forward Dalton Mellmer, junior center Stephen Kristy and sophomore guard Kye Erickson — the Night Hawks soared to a 65-51 victory over Region 7 opponent Glen Ullin-Hebron.
“It’s definitely good to get one under the belt and have it be a W, and start going from here and getting back to normal,” Hettinger-Scranton head coach Adam Hill said.
Seniors Justis Caldwell and Ben Laufer, the team’s only starters not injured in the Jan. 13 accident, took the team on their shoulders.
Caldwell, a 6-foot-4 forward averaging 9.1 points per game, had season highs of 27 points and 15 rebounds. Laufer, a 6-foot-2 guard, had 17 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals.
But they didn’t do it all.
Backups like junior Tanner Stippich and sophomore Damon Mellmer, both thrown into more playing time because of injuries, responded by knocking down big shots. Mellmer, a sophomore and Dalton’s younger brother, had 10 points.
“We were a little shorthanded, but a lot of guys on the bench stepped up,” Laufer said.   Click here to read entire article
